About Us

Positioning Ballet was set up by Ted Brandsen, Artistic Director, Dutch National Ballet, in 2017 to provide an opportunity for Artistic Directors of ballet and dance companies from around the globe to come together in a private environment to share issues, challenges, successes and concerns with their peers.

The Positioning Ballet Conferences were a direct follow on from DanceEast’s pioneering Rural Retreats, first launched in the UK in 2003 by Assis Carreiro who was then Artistic Director and CEO of DanceEast. The latter were the first ever gatherings that brought together Artistic Directors for much needed reflective time for sharing, learning, challenge and exchange. Further Retreats brought together future leaders which then led to a series of international placements.

Twenty years on from the first gathering, and post lockdown, Black Lives Matter and numerous global issues and challenges, it was timely to reflect on the future of Positioning Ballet. It became clear from discussions with dance leaders around the globe that a more formal international organisation to support existing and future Artistic Directors around the globe was much needed.
